Fake Poll : What keyboard keys do you use when you play?
As the title says, what keys do you use when you play Blood? Below I have constructed a format you can copy, if you like, to save you the trouble of typing a massive post. Obviously if you use the mouse, just say so.
Below that is my keyboard setup. I wonder if anyone uses my odd setup.

Kinda funny, because the controls I always used to use I was never terribly good at, especially since the introduction of a well-working mlook.
So back when I played games without a well-working mlook, I used a Gravis 4-button gamepad and keyboard.
Move forward : gamepad up
Move backward : gamepad back
Look left : don't need it
Look right : don't need it
Look up : page up
Look down : page down
Look center : end
Strafe left : bottom left gamepad button + gamepad arrow
Strafe right : same as Strafe left
Jump : double bottom left gamepad button
Crouch : keyboard c or double upper right gamepad button
Primary fire : upper left gamepad button
Secondary fire : upper right gamepad button or x
Use key (activation of doors and buttons) : upper right gamepad button
Now when I play, I typcially use the mouse though, with a slightly different keyboard layout.
Brings back the old memory of misconfigured gamepads LOL.
Back then, games initialized the gamepad direction in game startup (before the menu)... you had to hit upper+left & button one, lower+right & button one, then center and button one. If you screwed up, once you got in the game you constandly ran around helplessly in circles.
Was really annoying for dialup blood bath games as you had to resync and hope the other person was dialing/listening already.

No mouse for Blood on this end either.

For years me and my brother used the keyboard and thought that
there was nothing else. When we did discover mouse/keyboard
it was like a hole new world pin point aiming was suddenly there and
with the freedom of looking around in games like Blood Duke and Quake
we felt so much more in the worlds. (and i know no mouse control but bear with me) But it wasent untill we met Fenix Rising a german Q2 player
in a one on one that we where given the secrete to expert key setup.
with the mouse as look although you can use the numpad for it
the setup is as follows
Move forward : E
Move backward : D
Strafe left : S
Strafe right : F
Jump : Space
Crouch : Z
Primary fire : LMB
Secondary fire : RMB
Use key : on most games just shift but on blood you have to do some squat pushing which is a bit tricky so i have a secondery as G
I hope some of you will try this setup not only for blood but all FPS
becose i and my brother can vouch for it's effectivness on almost
all FPS's since Doom1
for keyboard lovers as i said use numpad for shooting and looking but
i strongly recomend the mousae option
shoot : right arrow
alternate fire : numpad enter

i don't see why don't use mouse since it is officially supported. Quake in this way was much more strange: mlook (if you remember) wasn't there as "normal" option but only with console (or autoexec or other cfg) command. only later (and in build games before, but regarding "true 3d" games:)) mlook became part of the options. anyway...
my setup:
Move forward : W
Move backward : S
Look left : -
Look right : -
Look up : -
Look down : -
Look center : -
Strafe left : A
Strafe right : D
Jump : SPACE
Crouch : SHIFT
Primary fire : MB1
Secondary fire : MB2
Use key (activation of doors and buttons) : E
Next weapon: Q
next item: Z
previous item: X
use item R (or F?)
MB2 double click opens doors, middle button (wheel) is strafe too and double click jumps...
In times of doom i used to play with mouse only (MB1 - shoot, MB2 - move forward, MB3 - strafe, MB2 doubleclick - open). keyboard numbers to change weapons. DOOM had no other useful keys so mouse with 3 buttons was enough to control all action.
When DUKE appeared i used mouse still, but added:
Move forward : UP
Move backward : DOWN
Look left :
Look right :
Look up :
Look down :
Look center :
Strafe left : LEFT
Strafe right : RIGHT
Jump : CONTROL
Crouch : SHIFT
Primary fire : MB1
Secondary fire : Ins (it was a habbit to use MB2 to walk forward - habbit from Doom)
Use key (activation of doors and buttons) : MB2 double click.
but later "classic" WSAD introduced to Quake community. i resisted as long as I could untill I've started to play NOLF1 where setup didn't want to change any actual keys (letters on keyboard). i wanted to finish the game and got used to WSAD. later i even loved it because hands fell "more free" when on different sides of keyboard rather then my previous (arrows) setup, where arrows are right part of keyboard and a little bit more to the right is a mouse. kinda tied. WSAD and mouse is more like playing piano - free...

The Keyboard vs. Mouse thing is just prefrence. Personaly I like the keyboard only setup because of the old school feal, and because I really don't like the stretching effect you get in Build when you look up and down.
The Keyboard + Mouse setup took a little while to catch on and only became really popular when it was force on the general public by Q2, HL, and Unreal. Atleast that's what my experiece was when playing LAN games at the various colleges around here.
Edit: I take it back Q2 still had the up/down, left/right arrow keys set as default. It looks like HL was the first to set "wasd+mouse" as a default setup. Trying to check Unreal and see what that is set to.

Kinda funny, after quake 1's mlook came out, I have used that sense (I suck with basic keyboard settings)Ra_Ra_Gazaa wrote:I only started customizing controls and using the mouse around when Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 came out.
Quake 3 made me really realize just how badly I sucked with the keyboard, and made me find a way to comfortably be able to jump, strafe left and right, switch weapons, crouch, zoom, back up, and be able to use items all with the keyboard, and still have a hand free for the mouse.
wasd just doesn't work for me, I don't think about letters for movement and such. It ended up I had to find something natural for me, but what I did find, I now use in all the older games that I use a mouse in.
